In true Panama schizophrenic fashion, some of the best ceviche I have eaten in this country can be found at this liquor shop. Bodega de Mi Amiga is your typical discount liquor warehouse with oversized bottles of tequila and radioactive-colored mixers. On one wall of the store, however, there is a cooler, in which happily marinate tens of ceviche containers. They have a great zingy shrimp ceviche made with tongue-tingling freshly grated horseradish. The half-dollar-sized shrimp almost explode when you bite into them--really good. They also have the more traditional octopus and sea bass ceviche. The marinades are balanced perfectly-- not too lemony or salty—--and the onions have become pickled so they're not offensive to the palate. To top it off, they give you a brown paper bag, a la Colt 45. I never would have pictured myself eating near-raw fish out of a liquor store, but I'll tell ya, it was pretty damn good. |
