The Panama City condo market will be plagued not only by lists of unsold (or perhaps incomplete) apartment units as well as tumbling prices, but also by an outbreak of unhappy buyers who, faced with dreary options, risk big time losses when/if they try to sell: an alignment of stars that will lead to a steep hike in legal disputes, rulings about which will fall on both sides of the fence.

I hadn't been in the States for more than one hour when I noticed a sign clearly displayed on the way to baggage claim: Caution, this sign read. Please Watch Out! Glass door is transparent. In case you needed it, the sign had been translated to Spanish as well, proving to me that thankfully, stupidity in the USA is not limited only to English-speakers.

Many people who invest in Panamanian real estate choose to register their land or property under the name of a Panamanian corporation instead of directly under their own name. This process is also common among Panamanians for several reasons – the major one being anonymity. This is not necessarily some Machiavellian tactic reserved for shady criminals – it is more of a mainstream loophole that will benefit almost anyone who uses it, including shady criminals.

So you want to take part in the Panama real estate boom while profits are still inevitable – but you don't currently have the money to pay for it? In our world of credit purchasing where money can materialize for those willing to sign their souls future income over to a bank, anything is possible. In Panama, foreigners have the same rights as citizens when it comes to purchasing and owning property. Also, because the property titles in Panama are standardized and recognizable by law they can be accepted as collateral for a loan. These facts, along with Panama's reputable banking system help to make the process secure and respectively hassle-free compared with its Latin American neighbors.

Because Panama is so new to the real estate and investment markets there has, up until recently, been a lack altogether of title insurance agencies. With more and more foreigners coming in though, expecting the same services they use at home, there has been an opening for equity providers (since the banks here haven't yet ventured into those waters). So, if the title insurance industry in Panama hasn't developed fully yet, does that mean you should neglect it as well?

The tropical beaches and lush jungles of trendy Costa Rica have been commercialized in TV commercials, magazine ads, and the occasional Magic Eye optical illusion book, where if you look long and hard enough, you can see excited titi monkeys jumping into the ocean. Because Panama is following suit, it can be helpful to take a look at certain real estate scams from Costa Rica, then evaluate whether or not they could happen here.
